meaning by design
Debbie Shepardson explores how perception takes shape through simplicity, structure, and silence. With roots in visual and performing arts and a background in behavioral psychology, her work studies how the unseen defines what we notice.

Her work started with what turned out not to be a blank flipbook. Before noticing the drawings on the pages, she had already supplied her own interpretation, revealing how easily meaning forms in negative space. Since then, she has focused on how people fill gaps, project meaning, and respond when nothing is explained for them.

The Invisible Book began as a study of absence and became the foundation for The Invisible Project, a continuing exploration of how design, awareness, and emotion create meaning across page, screen, and form.
